'We want Drenge, We want Drenge'. Il pubblico sta già pogando ancor prima che le luci si abbassino.
Trepidazione nell'aria. 'We want Drenge, We want Drenge'. L'odore della birra si fa più intenso e fa un caldo infernale.
Boato.
 
Ma facciamo un passo indietro: è il 21 aprile e c'è un sole che spacca le pietre.
La mia compagna di avventure arriva da Brighton e mi raggiunge prima del concerto, ci sediamo con una pinta in mano e cominciamo a parlare dell'ultima creazione di questo duo chiamato 'Drenge' proveniente da una cittadina nei pressi di Sheffield: così come in un business familiare i due fratelli Loveless (Eoin, Voce/Chitarra - Rory, Batteria) cominciano a suonare nel 2011 e producono il primo omonimo album 'Drenge' nel vicino 2013. Sonorità ruvide e prepotenti contraddistinguono il loro sound, accompagnato da testi concisi quasi urlati e ritmi di batteria accattivanti che gli assicurano un palco nei maggiori festival inglesi, e dopo poco in tutta Europa.
La pinta è quasi finita e noi stiamo ancora discutendo; mentre lei predilige il primo album, io preferisco il secondo, uscito questo mese stesso, 'Undertow'.
Camden è a poche fermate della metro e per una volta, riusciamo ad arrivare puntuali all'Electric Ballroom.
Aprono le danze un gruppo di Manchester tutto al femminile, 'Pins', che, con un album alle spalle ('Girl Like Us') e uno in uscita ('Wild Nights') hanno già fatto da spalla a molte band conosciute. Sebbene il loro successo, sul palco non interagiscono molto con i fans e danno il meglio solo durante l'ultima parte del live, quando la leader abbandona la chitarra e ci canta la loro più grande hit 'LuvU4Lyf'.
Seguono i Big Deals, un quartetto composto per metà al femminile la cui peculiarità sta nei due leaders (Alice Costelloe/Kasey Underwood, entrambi voce e chitarra) i quali lungo ogni canzone si rincorrono in due ottave diverse. Il gruppo ha già prodotto due album: 'Lights Out' e 'June Gloom', inoltre, ha aperto concerti di band internazionali dal calibro di Depeche Mode; ma nonstante questo, non riescono a catturare la mia attenzione.

Le luci illuminano il palco e i due fratelli biondi salgono accompagnati dal nuovo acquisto, Rob Graham che dal 2014 diventa loro bassista.
La scaletta sembra poter esaudire i desideri di ogni fan più incallito.
Si parte con “Running Wild” e “Side by Side” il cui effetto del riverbero viene usato per creare un'atmosfera più dark il cui ultimo album è caratterizzato.
“Gun Crazy” e “Nothing” fanno andare in estasi la folla, che balla e si muove come non ci fosse un domani. Inizia la mia perferita dell'album nuovo, “The Snake”, che a mio parere, rappresenta al meglio il nuovo 'mood' della fresca creazione discografica in cui il basso risulta decisivo nel sostenere le canzoni.
La band è riuscita a conquistare un suono potente, cattivo, che tutto fa pensare meno che sul palco vi siano solo 3 elementi. Eoin non sbaglia una nota, e si susseguono “Backwaters”, “We Can Do What We Want”, “I Wanna Break You In Half” e la bellissima “Bloodsports”, durante la quale vengono lanciate birre e i poghi fanno da protagonista, sebbene il pubblico giovane.
L'atmosfera si fa più cupa e i ritmi più lenti, “Favourite Son” e “Standing in The Cold” ci riportano a sonorità che ricordano i Nirvana e rimandono un poco all'album “Psycho Candy” dei The Jesus and Mary Chain.
E' il turno della strumentale “Undertow” che sfocia attraverso un susseguirsi di effetti, nel nuovo singolo “Never Awake” durante il quale la band da il meglio di sè, e la folla (me compresa) si lascia andare a balli sfrenati.
Le ultime 3 canzoni danno il via ad un pogo incontrollabile “Face Like Skull”, “Fuckabout” e “Let's Pretend” che lasciano i fans senza voce, e un ragazzo accanto a me senza una scarpa.

The crowd is already moshpitting even though the gig hasn't started yet.
Excitement's in the air. 'We want Drenge! We want Drenge!'
The smell of beer is filthy and the venue is getting warmer and warmer.
Roar.
 
But let's take a step backwards, it's Tuesday, april 21th and the sun is shining bright.
My gigmate arrives from Brighton and we meet up before our night out, we decide to get a pint and we start talking about the last creation of  this duo called 'Drenge' coming from a little village near Sheffield: like in a family business the Loveless brothers (Eoin, Vocal/Guitar - Rory, Drums) form a band in 2011 and record their first album in the early 2013 named, 'Drenge'.
Rough, high and mighty vibes mark their sound alongside intense lyrics and captivating rhythm, which help them gain a stage in many festivals, first in the UK, then all over Europe.
I've almost finished the whole beer while we're still talking; she prefers their first album while I fancy their second one, 'Undertow', published this month.
Camden's not that far and after a few stops we manage to reach the venue, Electric Ballroom, in time (for the very first time in our life).
The party starts with a Mancunian girl band, 'Pins', which with one album on their shoulders ('Girl Like Us') and one soon to be realised ('Wild Nights') have already supported many well-known bands. Despite their success, there's no connection with the audience and they manage to prove their talent just during the last songs, when the leader put down the guitar and sing their biggest hit 'LuvU4Lyf'.
It's now 'Big Deal' 's turn, a quartet characterized by two leaders (Alice Costelloe/Kaisey Underwood, both Vocal/Guitar) whose voices chaise one another along two octaves.
These guys have already recorded two albums: 'Lights Out' as well as 'June Gloom', and were lucky enough to open gigs of international band, such as Depeche Mode...but despite this, they can't catch my attention.

Lights now are focused on two blonde brothers who are walking the stage with a new member, Rob Graham (bass) who joined them in 2014.
The setlist seems to grant their biggest fans' wishes.
'Running Wild' is the first song that the band performs, followed by 'Side by Side'; both of them marked out by the reverber effect which gives their new album a gloomy atmosphere.
'Gun Crazy' and 'Nothing' bring the audience to ecstasy, as everyone is dancing crazy, then it's 'The Snake', my second album's favourite song. In my opinion, it represents the mood of their latest creation, where the bass line is becoming more and more essential for the new songs.
The duo has achieved a strong and overwhelming sound, it's hard to think that there are only three instruments on stage. Eoin doesn't miss a shot and 'Backwaters', 'We Can Do What We Want', 'I Wanna Break You In Half' come in succession, until the stunning 'Bloodsports', when the young crowd is driven crazy and starts throwing beers in the air and moshpitting.
Atmosphere's dark now and rhythm's getting slow for 'Favourite Son' and 'Standing In The Cold' which remind me of Nirvana or The Jesus and Mary Chain's 'Psycho Candy'.
Here's the instrumental 'Undertow', merged through loads of effects, into the new single 'Never Awake'. The band is blowing us away and people are getting insane.
The last three songs call an end to the show: 'Face Like A Skull', 'Fuckabout', 'Let's Pretend' and our voice is gonelike the shoes of a dude next to me.
